Dear Friend!
My name is Hazriq Idrus, author of The Stage Fright Antidote! (co-author of three other books.) and founder of The Speaking Factory Pte Ltd.
As a child, I was really shy and timid. I trembled whenever I was asked to stand and speak in class. Once I was “volunteered” by my teacher to take part in an inter-class Quiz competition that required me to stand on stage to answer questions. The anxiety made me blundered and I lost in the competition. I thought the world was going to crash.
I tried to overcome my fears by making more presentations my secondary school. But a twist of movement in one of the sessions on school stage caused me to panic; and that led me to being teased, called names, laughed at and was bullied at times. My self-esteem hit rocked bottom. Moreover, I also did not have a good social and fun life like my other peers.
During my post-secondary school days, I noticed that those who presented well, will always have a upper hand at things. I looked at how much I enjoyed my teachers' lessons because they could engage with us, the audience.
I wished to be like them. It was then I realised that I need to overcome this problem. I need to find help. And that was when I was introduced into theatre.
As an introvert, it is important for me to find an outlet to express myself. When I joined theatre, that was my main intention. Little did I know that theatre opened up my thinking and it was the starting of an exciting journey for me.
Working in theatre pushed the envelope and it developed my creativity and speaking confidence. As a newbie in stage acting, I had to go through various acting classes and workshops to develop my acting & improvisational theatre skills. During the process, I noticed that even my seasoned actor-colleagues had stage frights! However, what fascinated me was how they overcame their nervousness by preparing themselves before their performances. I realised that all the work took place BEFORE the actual performances! And that made a lot of difference on stage when the actual show started!
When I was working in a corporate setting, I adopted the skills I learnt in stage acting into corporate & business presentations. Many times, I was asked to present at work or host corporate events.
My theatre and acting background helped me a lot. I managed to share my messages to my colleagues and added value to my then-colleagues; while at the sametime ELEVATED my VALUE & VISIBILITY at the workplace. I was given to lead large projects and got promoted a few times in my ten years in the corporate settings.
Since acting & theatre helped me transform, I thought what if I could share this skill with the rest of the the people, like yourself, who needs to develop their confidence in speaking & presenting. I strongly believe that speaking and presenting ELEVATE our VALUE & VISIBILITY in any industry we come from.
However, I do understand that not everyone would want to be an actor. So using these experiences I acquired throughout my involvement in theatre, I began to develop programmes so that people can still benefit from my experiences and overcome the fear of presentation; and that they can then make the difference in their lives.
